Archaeological excavations of Stabiae

The ancient Stabiae, Castellammare di Stabia, is little known, but it is a very important city for the ancient Vesuvian area.
Compared to the more famous excavations of Ercolano and Pompei, those of Stabiae give the opportunity to observe an unprecedented aspect on the lifestyle of the ancient Romans: in fact, Stabiae was, in Roman times, a holiday resort, with numerous residential or rustic villas, finely decorated and embellished with furnishings of great value.
Today, only a small part of the ancient city has been brought to light: Villa San Marco, Villa Arianna and the second complex. But there are other villas that are still partially or completely underground, while others are still unexplored and to be discovered.
